Affirmation

Arild Andersen Group's latest release, Affirmation, is a masterclass in spontaneous group creativity. Recorded in November 2021 at Oslo's Rainbow Studio, this almost entirely improvised album showcases the Norwegian bassist's ability to push boundaries and challenge his fellow musicians.

At 77 years old, Arild Andersen remains a pillar of the ECM label, with a discography spanning nearly half a century. For Affirmation, he is joined by a new quartet of talented Norwegian musicians from the next two generations: Helge Lien on piano, Håkon Mjåset Johansen on drums, and Marius Neset on tenor saxophone. Together, they create a rich and dynamic sound that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.

The album is divided into two parts, with the first seven tracks forming a cohesive narrative. From the opening notes of "One (Affirmation Part I)" to the romantic impressionism of "Seven (Affirmation Part II)", the group demonstrates an unwavering commitment to their craft. The album concludes with "Short Story", a beautiful, Jarrett-esque ballad penned by Andersen, featuring a captivating saxophone statement full of emotion.
