Antarctica - Vangelis

Album Description

"Antarctica," released in 1983, is a captivating soundtrack album by the renowned Greek electronic composer Vangelis. This album serves as the score for the 1983 Japanese film "Nankyoku Monogatari" (lit. "South Pole Story"), directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara. The film, based on a true story, was a significant success in Japan and tells the tale of two Japanese scientists navigating the harsh realities of Antarctica.

The album, originally released under the Polydor label, is a masterclass in Vangelis' signature new age style, blending ambient and electronic elements to create a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. Each track, from the evocative "Theme From Antarctica" to the introspective "Memory Of Antarctica," captures the stark beauty and isolation of the Antarctic landscape. The compositions are intricate and layered, showcasing Vangelis' prowess in creating atmospheric and cinematic music.

"Antarctica" is a testament to Vangelis' ability to evoke powerful imagery through sound. The album's eight tracks, all remastered, offer a seamless journey through the icy expanses of the South Pole. Highlights include the ethereal "Song Of White" and the dramatic "Deliverance," which underscores the film's poignant narrative. The album's duration of 44 minutes is a concise yet impactful exploration of the human spirit against the backdrop of one of the world's most unforgiving environments.

For fans of Vangelis' previous works, such as the soundtracks for "Chariots of Fire" and "Blade Runner," "Antarctica" offers a similar depth and richness. The album's release in various formats, including CD and vinyl, ensures that it remains accessible to both new and longtime admirers of Vangelis' music. Whether you're familiar with Vangelis' discography or discovering his work for the first time, "Antarctica" is a compelling addition to any music collection.
