Black Orpheus - Masabumi Kikuchi

Album Description

"Black Orpheus" is a profound and intimate solo piano recital by the late, great Masabumi Kikuchi, captured live at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall on October 26, 2012. This album serves as a testament to Kikuchi's unique musical journey and his final artistic statements before his passing in 2015. The Japanese pianist, known for his idiosyncratic improvisational style, delivers a performance that is both personal and revelatory, showcasing his distinctive approach to the solo piano format.

The album features a series of original compositions under the collective title "Tokyo," each part exploring different facets of Kikuchi's late style. Among these pieces, "Manhã De Carnaval," a touching rendition of the theme from the 1959 Brazilian film "Black Orpheus," stands out, offering a wistful and yearning atmosphere. Additionally, Kikuchi revisits "Little Abi," a poignant ballad dedicated to his daughter, which he previously recorded with drummer Elvin Jones.

"Black Orpheus" is a document of Kikuchi's final solo recital, not just in his homeland but anywhere. It represents the culmination of decades of artistic development, where Kikuchi's individuality shines through in every note. The album's duration of 70 minutes is filled with Kikuchi's ruminative and introspective playing, making it a significant addition to the jazz fusion and jazz genres. Released by ECM Records on April 1, 2016, this live recording is a poignant reminder of Masabumi Kikuchi's enduring legacy and his unique contribution to the world of jazz.
