Born in Lucerne and raised in Fribourg, Jordan's journey into music was unconventional, having initially pursued studies in literature, law, and theology. His powerful physical presence and sardonic smile belied his conducting style, which was marked by careful understatement and a richly colorful orchestral sound.
Jordan's career spanned numerous prestigious opera houses and orchestras, including those in Zurich, St. Gallen, Basel, Lausanne, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, where he served as musical director for 12 years. His repertoire was diverse, encompassing works from the French school, both famous and lesser-known, as well as iconic operas like "Cosi fan Tutte," "La Bohème," and "La Walkyrie." Jordan's performances were characterized by their flexibility, warmth, and musical sensitivity, earning him multiple grand prix discographiques in France, Britain, and the United States. His legacy endures as a testament to his passion, exigency, and deep musical insight.
