Cornelius was also known for his Stabat Mater, composed in 1849, and his association with the Wagner circle, from which he managed to maintain a respectful distance. His contributions to music extend beyond composition, as he was also a poet and translator, enriching the cultural landscape with his multifaceted talents. Cornelius passed away in Mainz in 1874 at the age of forty-nine, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences.
