About William Walton
Sir William Turner Walton, born in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1902, was a prolific English composer whose six-decade career spanned a wide array of classical genres. From his early days as a chorister at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, Walton's musical journey was marked by innovation and versatility. He is renowned for his evocative film scores, including those for the iconic "Battle of Britain," and his grand coronation marches, such as "Crown Imperial" and "Orb and Sceptre," which have become staples of British ceremonial music. Walton's repertoire also includes the dramatic cantata "Belshazzar's Feast," the lyrical "Viola Concerto," and his powerful "First Symphony." His compositions, characterized by their rich harmonies and vivid orchestration, continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Walton passed away in 1983, leaving behind a legacy that remains a cornerstone of 20th-century classical music.
