About Catherine Hewgill

Catherine Hewgill is a distinguished Australian cellist renowned for her profound musicality and technical virtuosity. Since 1990, she has held the prestigious position of principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, captivating audiences with her rich, expressive sound. Hewgill's journey began in Perth, where she started playing the cello at the age of ten. Her education took her to the Royal College of Music in London and the University of Southern California, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree and was honored as the Outstanding Chamber Music Graduate.

As a chamber musician, Hewgill has made significant contributions, notably as a founding member of the Novalis Quartet and through her recordings with The Australian Trio for ABC Classics. Her collaborations extend internationally, including a notable recording with the esteemed Russian pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, featuring works by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff. Hewgill's artistry is further enriched by her performance on a rare 1729 Carlo Tononi cello, adding a historical depth to her musical interpretations.
