About Wilbur Harden

Wilbur Harden, an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist, left an indelible mark on the genre despite his relatively brief and enigmatic career. Born in 1924, Harden's musical journey is most notably intertwined with the legendary John Coltrane, with whom he recorded several seminal albums in 1958, including his final album as a leader, 'Tanganyika Strut'. Harden's discography, though limited, is rich with hard bop and bebop influences, showcasing his unique tone and depth on both trumpet and flugelhorn. His collaborations with other jazz luminaries such as Gene Ammons, George Russell, and Curtis Fuller further cement his place in jazz history. Despite his significant contributions, Harden remains a mysterious figure, disappearing from the scene after 1960 and passing away in 1969. His music, however, continues to captivate and inspire, offering a glimpse into the vibrant East Coast jazz scene of the late 1950s.
