"Konarski & Folks" is the debut album as a leader by the talented Polish jazz saxophonist and composer, Marek Konarski. Released in November 2021, this captivating record showcases Konarski's unique blend of jazz, improvised music, and traditional Polish folk elements, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in his cultural heritage.
Recorded in a quartet setting, the album features Konarski on tenor saxophone, accompanied by pianist Artur Tuźnik, bassist Damian Kostka, and drummer Kuba Gudz. The ensemble is joined by vocalist Ania Rybacka on the track "O mój rozmarynie," adding a hauntingly beautiful vocal element to the otherwise instrumental album.
The nine-track album presents seven original compositions by Konarski, along with two arrangements of Polish folk songs. The tracks range from the upbeat and energetic "Marika" and "New Folk" to the more introspective and melancholic "Chopin" and "Highlands Blues." Each piece offers a glimpse into Konarski's rich musical vocabulary, drawing from his extensive experience performing and studying at European universities.
"Konarski & Folks" is a testament to the vibrant jazz scene in Poland and Konarski's impressive growth as a musician. Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, Konarski has continued to push the boundaries of his artistry, resulting in an impressive and engaging debut album that showcases his unique voice in the world of jazz. The album is released on the AMM label and is available in both CD and digital formats.
