About Mel Lewis

Mel Lewis, born Melvin Sokoloff, was a titan of jazz drumming, renowned for his unique cymbal style and controlled, dynamic playing. Born in Buffalo, New York, to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, Lewis' musical journey began at the tender age of three, inspired by his drummer father. Throughout his career, he defied the stereotype of the aggressive big band drummer, instead choosing to support the band and serve the music. Lewis' collaborations are legendary, notably his partnership with Thad Jones, forming the iconic Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1965. This band became a staple at New York's Village Vanguard, performing weekly for over a decade. Beyond his drumming, Lewis was also an esteemed educator and author, leaving an indelible mark on the jazz world. His contributions earned him fourteen Grammy Award nominations, cementing his status as one of the most influential jazz drummers of all time.
