About Marshall Allen
Marshall Allen is a legendary figure in the world of free jazz and avant-garde music, renowned for his distinctive sound and innovative approach to the alto saxophone. Born in Philadelphia, Allen's musical journey began in the 1950s when he joined the iconic Sun Ra Arkestra, becoming a pivotal member of the group and a pioneer of the free jazz movement. His tenure with the Arkestra spanned over four decades, during which he also mastered a variety of other instruments, including the flute, oboe, piccolo, and the electronic wind instrument (EWI). In 1995, Allen assumed the leadership of the Sun Ra Arkestra, continuing the band's legacy of cosmic jazz and avant-garde experimentation.
Allen's debut solo album, "New Dawn," released in 2025, marked a significant milestone in his career, showcasing his unique compositional style and collaborative spirit. The album features a blend of cosmic jazz and free improvisation, with notable collaborations, including a track with Neneh Cherry.
