"Night Song," released in 2011 on ECM Records, is a captivating album of intimate duos for piano and cello, featuring the original compositions of Norwegian pianist Ketil Bjørnstad and Swedish cellist Svante Henryson. This collaboration marks a return to the piano/cello duo format that defined two of Bjørnstad's earlier acclaimed albums, "The River" and "Epigraphs," but offers a fresh narrative with Henryson's contributions. The album draws inspiration from the melodies of Franz Schubert, blending romantic linearity with a distinctive Scandinavian melancholy. Recorded in Norway in January 2009 and released two years later, "Night Song" spans 16 tracks, including the evocative bookends "Night Song - Evening Version" and "Night Song - Morning Version." The album's duration of 75 minutes provides a rich and immersive experience, showcasing the deep musical dialogue between Bjørnstad and Henryson. Each composition, from the haunting "Fall" to the serene "Serene," reveals the artists' ability to create warm and inviting music that resonates deeply with listeners.
