Samuel Capricornus
Samuel Friedrich Capricornus, born in 1628 in Žerčice, Czech Republic, was a prolific Baroque composer whose life, though brief, left an indelible mark on the musical landscape of his time. Fleeing religious persecution, Capricornus's family settled in Bratislava, where he later pursued studies in languages and theology before dedicating himself to music. His career flourished at the imperial court in Vienna and culminated in his appointment as Hofkapellmeister in Stuttgart, where his compositions gained widespread acclaim.
Capricornus's oeuvre spans nearly every genre of his era, including sacred liturgical music, instrumental works, and even operas and ballets, many of which have sadly been lost to time. His sacred works, however, have endured, showcasing his mastery of vocal and instrumental combinations that define the early German Baroque. Despite his untimely death at the age of 37 in 1665, Capricornus's music was celebrated across Europe, from Oxford to Krakow, testament to his enduring talent and influence. His compositions, characterized by their sensuous blend of voices and viols, continue to enchant and inspire, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Baroque music.
