"Seven Responses" is a profound and captivating double album from the renowned Philadelphia-based choir, The Crossing, released in February 2017 on the Innova label. This ambitious project is a response to Dieterich Buxtehude's iconic 17th-century oratorio, "Membra Jesu Nostri," a work consisting of seven cantatas that meditate on the suffering of Jesus. Seven contemporary composers were commissioned to create new works inspired by each of Buxtehude's cantatas, resulting in a diverse and deeply personal collection of choral pieces.
The album features fifteen-minute compositions from some of the world's foremost composers, each offering a unique interpretation of Buxtehude's sacred music. The Crossing, under the direction of Donald Nally, performs these new works in repertory with Buxtehude's original cantatas, accompanied by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and the Baroque ensemble Quicksilver. The result is a compelling blend of old and new, where the human voice takes center stage.
"Seven Responses" explores the theme of suffering and how we perceive and respond to it. The compositions vary widely in style and approach, yet they coalesce into a cohesive and powerful whole. The album's 18 tracks, spanning over an hour and 45 minutes, offer a rich and thought-provoking listening experience. From the haunting beauty of "To the Hands: No. 1, Prelude (Wordless)" to the intense drama of "Ad Cor: No. 4, Wound / Joy / I Laugh at You," each piece is a testament to the composers' artistry and The Crossing's exceptional vocal prowess.
This album is a testament to The Crossing's commitment to innovative and meaningful choral music. It's a unique opportunity to experience the interplay between historical and contemporary compositions, all centered around the timeless theme of human suffering and response. Whether you're a fan of choral music, Baroque music, or contemporary classical compositions, "Seven Responses" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
