Solo for Trio

Atle Nymo is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, born in Valnesfjord, who has made a significant mark on the international jazz scene. Known for his fluid and expressive tenor saxophone playing, Nymo's musical journey began at the age of 11 when he picked up the clarinet in his local marching band. By 15, he had added the tenor saxophone to his repertoire, studying under Henning Gravrok and joining the Bodø Big Band, where he collaborated with notable artists like Django Bates and Mike Westbrook.

Nymo's career has been marked by his work with prestigious ensembles such as Motif, an experimental jazz band with a distinctive sound influenced by Frank Zappa, and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, where he has had the opportunity to perform alongside jazz legends Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. His contributions to these groups highlight his versatility and innovative approach to jazz, blending powerful writing with simpatico free play and stylistic cross-pollination.

In addition to his ensemble work, Nymo has led his own projects, including the Atle Nymo Trio, which features a rotating cast of talented musicians. His debut album as a leader, "Solo for Trio," showcases his virtuosity and unique vision for the genre. Nymo's music is characterized by its forward-looking approach, often marked by a tantalizing balance of form and freedom, making him a key figure in the vibrant Scandinavian jazz scene. Beyond his musical achievements, Nymo is also an Associate Professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he teaches jazz saxophone and improvised music.
