Song Of The Earth - Dirty Projectors

Album Description

"Song of the Earth" is the ninth studio album from Dirty Projectors, the brainchild of award-winning songwriter and producer David Longstreth. Released on April 4, 2025, via Transgressive Records internationally and Nonesuch/New Amsterdam Records in the US, this album is a profound exploration of impermanence and the unsettling certainty of change. Originally conceived as a song cycle for the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, "Song of the Earth" premiered in 2022 at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie and has since evolved into a rich, genre-crossing collection of 24 tracks.

The album is a testament to Longstreth's eclectic influences, weaving together elements of Gustav Mahler's symphonic song-cycle "Das Lied von der Erde," the nature-inspired music of Olivier Messiaen, and joyful strands of Beach Boys-style polyphony. This art pop masterpiece is performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—featuring Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, and Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder. The result is a deeply moving meditation on humankind's relationship with the natural world and the inevitable passage of time.

"Song of the Earth" spans a diverse range of themes and moods, from the introspective "Blue of Dreaming" to the energetic "More Mania." The album's standout tracks include "Bank On," featuring a gorgeous solo from Felicia Douglass, and the hauntingly beautiful "Raven Ascends." With a running time of just over an hour, this album is a captivating journey through the complex interplay of human experience and the natural world. Fans of Dirty Projectors' unique blend of art pop and experimental music will find much to love in "Song of the Earth," while newcomers will be drawn in by its rich textures and profound themes.
