    About Percy Sledge

    Percy Sledge, born in the rural farming community of Leighton, Alabama, rose to fame with his iconic 1966 hit "When a Man Loves a Woman," a song that topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts and became Atlantic's first million-selling single. Sledge's powerful, emotive vocals on this track not only launched his career but also played a pivotal role in establishing southern soul on the international stage. Before his musical success, Sledge worked in various roles, including farming and healthcare, before becoming a touring vocalist in the early 1960s. His soulful voice and heartfelt performances earned him a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Throughout his career, Sledge released several albums, including "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Warm and Tender Soul," showcasing his versatility in R&B, soul, and gospel music. Sledge passed away in 2015 at the age of 74, but his timeless music continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
