    About Percy Sledge

    Percy Sledge, born in Leighton, Alabama, was a powerhouse of American R&B, soul, and gospel music, best known for his iconic hit "When a Man Loves a Woman." This heart-wrenching ballad, released in 1966, topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts, earning him a gold certification from the RIAA and launching his career into the stratosphere. Before his musical success, Sledge worked in various roles, including farming and healthcare, before becoming a touring vocalist in the early 1960s. His soulful voice and emotive performances made him a beloved figure in the music world, leading to his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Sledge's discography includes notable albums like "When a Man Loves a Woman," "Warm and Tender Soul," and "The Percy Sledge Way," each showcasing his unique blend of soul and gospel influences. His cousin was the soul singer Jimmy Hughes. Sledge passed away in 2015 at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and move fans worldwide.
