The Barber of Bagdad

Peter Cornelius, born in 1824, was a German composer and writer whose life was deeply intertwined with the world of music and theater. The son of two actors, Cornelius was recognized early for his talents and was encouraged to pursue a career in the arts. His most renowned work is the opera "The Barber of Baghdad," which has garnered significant acclaim and multiple recordings, particularly in Germany. Cornelius was also known for his Stabat Mater, composed in 1849, and his association with the Wagner circle, from which he managed to maintain a respectful distance. His contributions to music extend beyond composition, as he was also a poet and translator, enriching the cultural landscape with his multifaceted talents. Cornelius passed away in Mainz in 1874 at the age of forty-nine, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences.
