Omara Portuondo, often hailed as the "Billie Holiday of Cuba," is a legendary figure in Cuban music with a career that spans over seven decades. Born in Havana, she rose to fame in the 1950s as a member of the popular vocal group Cuarteto d'Aida. Her velvety voice and emotive delivery have made her a beloved figure in the world of boleros, but her musical repertoire extends far beyond, encompassing styles such as son cubano and Latin jazz. Portuondo's international acclaim soared when she joined the Buena Vista Social Club in 1996, at the age of 67, becoming the sole female member of the iconic ensemble. Her collaborations with legendary musicians like Ibrahim Ferrer and Chucho Valdés have resulted in timeless recordings that showcase her immense talent.
