About Machito

Machito, born Frank Grillo, was a pioneering figure in Latin jazz, renowned for his instrumental role in shaping Afro-Cuban jazz, Cubop, and salsa. Raised in Havana alongside his sister, the celebrated singer Graciela, Machito's musical journey took him to midtown Manhattan, where he established a residency at La Conga Club before being called to military service in 1943. As a bandleader, singer, and percussionist, Machito's innovative fusion of jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms laid the foundation for the vibrant sounds of the 1940s and 1950s. His 14-piece orchestra, featuring the sole female vocalist, delivered an infectious blend of mambo, cha cha cha, and son cubano, ensuring that every performance was an unforgettable experience. Machito's collaborations, such as the iconic album with Chico O'Farrill featuring Charlie Parker and Buddy Rich, cemented his legacy as a trailblazer in the world of Latin music.
