Alexander Glazunov

Alexander Glazunov, born into a wealthy family in St. Petersburg on August 10, 1865, was a towering figure of the late Russian Romantic period, renowned for his compositions, conducting, and teaching. His musical prowess was evident from a young age, beginning piano lessons at nine and later studying composition. Glazunov's career spanned a tumultuous period in Russian history, and he played a pivotal role in the reorganization of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory following the Bolshevik Revolution, serving as its director until 1930. Among his notable students was the legendary Dmitri Shostakovich. Glazunov's most celebrated work is the ballet "Raymonda," which remains a staple in the repertoire. His compositions, characterized by their rich harmonies and vivid orchestration, continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Glazunov passed away in Paris in 1936, leaving behind a legacy that endures in the annals of classical music.
