Andreas Willscher

Andreas Willscher is a versatile and award-winning German composer and pianist whose musical journey spans a wide range of genres and styles. Born in Hamburg in 1955, Willscher's early musical training began with accordion lessons, followed by piano studies and self-taught organ playing, which led to his appointment as organist at St. Francis Church in Hamburg at the age of 15. His formal education continued at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, where he studied composition and organ.

Willscher's compositions are renowned for their diversity, encompassing symphonic works, oratorios, and even cabaret jazz and rock. His organ works, in particular, are celebrated for their unique blend of post-tonal modernism, minimalism, and elements of jazz and rock. Notable works include his Organ Symphony No. 5, subtitled "Of Francis' Preaching on Holy Poverty," and his Organ Symphony No. 19 'Hallelujahs' and Organ Symphony No. 20 'Laetare.' Beyond his compositions, Willscher is also an accomplished organist and keyboardist, having performed with various jazz and rock ensembles.

His deep engagement with the musical traditions of the Bohemian countries and his numerous awards, including the Johann Wenzel Stamitz Prize from the Künstlergilde Esslingen, highlight his significant contributions to the musical world. Willscher's work is a testament to his innovative spirit and his ability to bridge diverse musical landscapes, making him a standout figure in contemporary European music.
