Friedrich Kuhlau

Friedrich Kuhlau, born in Germany in 1786, was a pioneering figure in Danish music during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Settling in Copenhagen in his early twenties, Kuhlau became a central figure of the Danish Golden Age, blending his German roots with Danish cultural influences. He is renowned for his extensive piano works, including twenty-two sonatas, and his significant contributions to stage music. Kuhlau's composition "Elves' Hill" is particularly notable as the first true work of Danish National Romanticism, subtly paying tribute to the absolute monarchy. His cosmopolitan personality and forward-thinking approach made him a vital and influential figure in Danish music history.
