John Foulds

John Foulds (1880-1939) was a British composer of classical music, born into a musical family in Manchester. A largely self-taught figure, he began his musical journey playing the cello in the Hallé Orchestra alongside his father, a bassoonist. Foulds was a prolific composer, writing over sixty works that ranged from light music and theatre scores to more ambitious and exploratory pieces. His adventurous spirit led him to develop a deep passion for India and its musical traditions. Among his notable works are the World Requiem and the evocative "April-England." Though somewhat forgotten in history, Foulds' compositions offer a unique blend of English pastoral charm and innovative exploration, making him a fascinating figure in early 20th-century music.
