Karel Šejna

Karel Šejna (1896-1982) was a distinguished Czech conductor and contrabassist, known for his exceptional contributions to classical music. Beginning his career in 1921 as a solo double bass player with the Czech Philharmonic, Šejna's conducting talent was soon recognized by Václav Talich, leading to a successful transition to the podium. In 1950, he was chosen by his peers to succeed Rafael Kubelík as the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, a testament to his skill and respect among colleagues. Šejna's interpretations of Czech music, particularly his recordings of Smetana's "Má vlast" and Dvořák's works, are celebrated for their depth and eloquence. His rendition of Wagner's "Parsifal" Prelude with the Czech Philharmonic is also highly regarded.
