Lucia Dlugoszewski
Lucia Dlugoszewski was a pioneering Polish-American artist whose work transcended the boundaries of music, dance, and invention. Born in 1925, Dlugoszewski's career spanned over five decades, during which she made significant contributions as a composer, poet, choreographer, and performer. She is renowned for her innovative approach to the grand piano, which she transformed into the "timbre piano" by incorporating objects on the strings and exploring the instrument's interior with various techniques. Her inventive spirit extended to creating unique percussion instruments, such as Unsheltered Rattles, Tangent Rattles, Square Drums, and Ladder Harps.
Dlugoszewski's collaboration with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company was particularly notable. She began composing for the company in 1951 and served as its music director until Hawkins's death in 1994, after which she became the artistic director. Her compositions, such as "Abyss and Caress," are known for their intense energy and emotional depth, reflecting her relentless creative drive. Dlugoszewski's legacy continues to inspire, showcasing her as a multifaceted artist who left an indelible mark on the worlds of music and dance.
