His career took off as a session musician and guitarist for Bulgarian rock groups, notably Impulse, where he toured Europe in the late 1980s and crossed paths with Swedish singer Björn Lodin.

Kotzev's discography is impressive, featuring five stellar hard rock albums with Brazen Abbot and the rock opera masterpiece "Nostradamus," released in 2001.
