Ralph Rousseau

Ralph Rousseau is a captivating figure in the world of music, known for his extraordinary versatility and deep-rooted passion for both art and science. Beginning his musical journey at the tender age of eight with the piano and bass guitar, Ralph went on to master the double bass at the conservatoire while simultaneously earning a university physics degree, graduating 'cum laude' in both fields. His professional career initially took off as a double-bass player, performing with prestigious ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam under the baton of renowned conductors like Riccardo Chailly.

Since 1996, Ralph Rousseau has specialized in performing early music, focusing on the viola da gamba. Under the tutelage of Jaap ter Linden, he has become an esteemed ambassador for this historic instrument, particularly the seven-stringed variety. His interpretations of solo viola da gamba works are celebrated for their depth and emotional resonance. Beyond his musical prowess, Ralph holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, showcasing his unique ability to straddle the worlds of art and science.
