Sándor Veress

Sándor Veress, born in 1907 in Kolozsvár, now Cluj-Napoca, Romania, was a composer who bridged two musical worlds: his native Hungary and his adopted home of Switzerland. Veress's early career was deeply influenced by his work with László Lajtha at the Budapest Ethnological Museum and his association with Béla Bartók, reflecting in his compositions a rich tapestry of Hungarian folk music traditions. His later life, spent in Switzerland from 1949 until his death in 1992, saw him become a Swiss citizen and continue his prolific compositional journey. Veress's works, including his evocative 'Transylvanian Dances' and his string quartets, showcase his unique voice, blending his Hungarian heritage with the influences of his Swiss environment. His music remains a testament to his cultural journey and his enduring legacy as a composer.
