Sir George Benjamin

Sir George Benjamin, born in 1960, is a preeminent figure in contemporary classical music, renowned for his distinctive compositions that blend an English sensibility with a fantastical touch reminiscent of Henry Purcell. Benjamin's musical journey began at the age of seven when he started playing the piano, and he soon began composing. His formal training includes studying composition with the legendary Olivier Messiaen and piano with Yvonne Loriod at the Paris Conservatoire. Benjamin's works have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, and he has collaborated with esteemed musicians such as Dietrich Henschel and Kent Nagano. In September 2025, Benjamin will take on the role of Composer-in-Residence with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, further cementing his influence in the classical music world.
