William Bolcom

William Bolcom, born in Seattle in 1938, is a vibrant and prolific figure in American music, renowned for his eclectic compositions and formidable skills as a pianist. His music spans nearly all genres, but he is particularly celebrated for his colourful and affectionate homages to American ragtime. Bolcom's extensive body of work includes the monumental 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience', a setting of William Blake's poetry that earned him multiple Grammy Awards. In addition to his compositional prowess, Bolcom is an accomplished performer, known for his dynamic presence on both concert and cabaret stages. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Arts, and the Detroit Music Award. Bolcom taught composition at the University of Michigan for over three decades and is married to the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Joan Morris. His contributions to music continue to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide.
