As a member of a distinguished musical dynasty, Piccinini's father, Leonardo Maria, and his brothers, Girolamo and Filippo, were all accomplished lutenists. Piccinini's career flourished with appointments at the Este court in Ferrara and later with Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini.
