Alessandro Piccinini

Alessandro Piccinini (1566 – c. 1638) was a renowned Italian lutenist and composer, born into a family of musicians in Bologna. As a member of a distinguished musical dynasty, Piccinini's father, Leonardo Maria, and his brothers, Girolamo and Filippo, were all accomplished lutenists. Piccinini's career flourished with appointments at the Este court in Ferrara and later with Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini. He is celebrated for his contributions to lute music, including his innovative works for the archlute, an instrument he is credited with inventing. Piccinini's compositions, which include a variety of dance pieces, arias, and intricate ricercares, reflect the rich musical heritage of his time and showcase his virtuosity and creativity. His legacy endures through his published collections, such as "Intavolatura di Liuto et di Chitarrone," which offer insights into his technical prowess and artistic vision.
