Born on February 2, 1930, Jamal's career spanned over six decades, making him one of the most successful small-group leaders in jazz history. His signature tune, "Poinciana," and his classic album "At the Pershing: But Not for Me" are testaments to his enduring impact. Jamal's measured, spare piano style inspired generations of musicians, including his lifelong friend Miles Davis. A convert to Islam, Jamal was also an educator and a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Grammy for his contributions to music history.
